If you ever went scuba diving or swimming in the ocean, you probably thought about huge, bulky sharks.Movies have made these fish vicous movie monsters with powerful chomping jaws and a taste for human flesh. But what's the truth behind all this terror and sci-fi?
The truth behind the tooth is that sharks rarely attack people! When a shark does bite a diver, the shark feels theatened, or scared. Sharks almost never aproach swimmers in the shallow water at daylight. Sometimes, but not too often, a shark will attack a surfboarder. When the surfboarders swim out to ocean, thier feet and hands look like flippers, and the surfboard looks almost like a body.
So it's not too suprising that most of the shark attacks were on the surfers. Over a year, sharks kill about a handful of people, but people kill thosands, if not millions of sharks a year. Some are caught for their coarse skin, which can be made into sandpaper, belts, or other items.
Most sharks are killed for their meat and fins, which are made into shark fin soup, a food in Asia. Some sharks are caught for their livers, which are the largest internal organs in thier bodys. The liver is procesed into oil, which can be used to make lipstick.
If nothing is done to protect sharks, these fantastic fish may disappear from our oceans......Forever.
