English settlers were afraid of wolves when they settled in North America. The settlers never seen anything like them, they did not like their howls, and just plain out were afraid of them. They killed them in fear, but also killed them because they preyed on their livestock.
Wolves are predators that have relatives that date back to the Ice Age.There are different kinds of wolves, but they are all mostly known for their long, sad howls that ring out in the night.
We do not know what these howls are for, but some people have ideas about what they could mean. They could be for locating pack members, finding lost cubs, or just for when they're lonely.
Wolves are members of the dog family, which is really something to think about the next time you pet your dog! Wolves live in groups, called a pack. The packs have territorys, like alligators and crocodiles. But unlike them, they share it more often.
Wolf packs eat, hunt, play, sleep and just laze around in their territorys.Packs are lead by a pair of wolves, called alphas. They are the first to eat a kill, give orders, and sometimes even 'banish' a unlucky pack member. Wolves fight for the right to become or stay as a alpha. The alpha is more likely to suceed, for it may have had many years of fighting for the right.
Wolves in America are endangered. They even became extint because the settlers cleared their forests to make way for livestock. Wolf fur was also very high in value. Some people just killed them because they thought they were dangerous.
Wolves in America, as I already said, became extint because of this. But luckly, Yellowstone National Park took wolves from Alaska and bred them to replenish the missing wolves. Other parks helped the replenishing wolves.
But it was not just the national parks. Some Americans helped wolves by adopting orphan wolf cubs and saying "NO" to wolf fur. One pair of people in Iowa even lived with a wolf pack!
Now, wolf hunting is mostly banned by the government. But there still is some hunting today. Support the wolves by not buying fur. Listen to the wolf's howl, that brings hope to the many generations of wolves to come.
